1st Place Award for Small Bathroom in the NKBA 2016 Design Vision Awards
This project was part of my own whole house remodel in Glen Ellyn and is the bathroom for my two teenage daughters. The space is a typical 5×7 hall bath, so providing adequate storage for linens, makeup and hair accoutrement was at the top of the list. I started by borrowing some space form the large adjoining hallway to create a linen/storage closet accessible from inside the bathroom. A vanity with drawers, a large medicine cabinet, and a train rack round out the storage options.
As part of the remodel we discovered that there was no HVAC running to the existing bathroom due to the location of the floor joists. We solved this by finding just enough space to run some tubing between the side of the founded tub and flat tub deck tile face. The other concern was the lack of natural light in the room, so we added a solar tube which provides a bit of natural glow.
To give the space an industrial feel, we chose a tub that could be tiled, a black hex floor, white subway tile with gray grout and weathered oak vanity. Other details including the retrofit shower head, barn door shower door and antique brass fixtures provide additional industrial touches while textured white wallpaper with a floral pattern gives the room just a wee bit of girl. The feature however that gets the most attention is the LED heated toilet seat because when your Mom is a bath designer, why not?
